Virginia Solar Incentives

Virginia offers several incentives to encourage solar energy adoption, including the Federal Solar Tax Credit, Net Metering, and Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs). Additionally, Virginia provides a property tax exemption for the increased value solar panels add to a property, according to Lumina Solar.

Federal Solar Tax Credit:

The Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) offers a 30% tax credit on the cost of solar panel systems for both residential and commercial installations through 2032, Lumina Solar states.

This credit can be applied to the purchase of solar panels, inverters, and energy storage batteries.

To qualify, homeowners must own the system, either through a cash purchase or solar loan.

Net Metering:

Net metering allows homeowners to receive credit on their electricity bills for the surplus solar energy their systems send back to the grid.

Dominion Energy customers should check with the utility company regarding specific net metering policies, as they are subject to change. Lumina Solar highlights the importance of this.

Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs):

Virginia has an SREC program, where homeowners earn credits for every megawatt-hour of solar energy their system produces.

These credits can be sold to utilities or other entities that need to fulfill renewable energy requirements, providing an additional income stream, as noted by Lumina Solar.

Other Incentives:

Property Tax Exemption:

Solar panels are exempt from property taxes on the added value they bring to a home. Lumina Solar confirms this benefit.

Building Energy Code:

Virginia has a building energy code that encourages energy efficiency, which can indirectly support solar energy adoption.

USDA REAP Grant:

The USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) offers grants for renewable energy projects, including solar, for agricultural producers.

VirginiaSAVES Green Community Program:

This program provides funding and resources for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in Virginia communities.

Access to Qualified Solar Installers:

Virginia encourages access to qualified solar installers to ensure proper installation and system performance, Lumina Solar points out.
